Steps to install Java 6 If you wish to continue with the old / original installer

Q: I upgraded my mac to OSX 10.10 Yosemite & 10.11 El Capitan and I am having trouble opening PDF Studio. I receive the message: “To open “PDF Studio 9” you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime.” How can I fix this?

A: Like other applications such as Dreamweaver or Creative Suite, PDF Studio requires Java 6 in order to run. During the upgrade process to Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite or 10.11 El Capitan, Java may be uninstalled from your system. In order to reinstall and run PDF Studio you will need to install the Java 6 Runtime again. You may receive a dialog that will direct you to the site where you can download the Java 6 Runtime. Once installed you can proceed as normal with installing and using PDF Studio. You can follow the instructions below to complete the Java 6 installation.

Installing Java SE 6 Runtime

  1. Click on the “More Info…” button. The “More Info” button may be broken on some Yosemite minor versions. If so, go to the Mac Support site (support.apple.com/kb/DL1572) to download Java 6.
  2. Click on the Download button on the Mac support page
  3. This will begin downloading the Java installer. You can see the current status of the download on your dock.
  4. Once the download is complete, click on the downloads icon on the dock to open the download folder. Then click on the file labeled JavaForOSX2014-001.dmg to open the download.
  5. Then double click on the JavaForOSX.pkg file to open the Java 6 installer
  6. Follow the installation instructions to complete installing Java 6 on your system
  7. Once the installation is complete you can proceed as normal with installing and/or using PDF Studio. In some cases, you may need to reinstall PDF Studio as well due to the way that the Mac OSX 10.10 upgrade rearanges the files on the system.

[The Bottom Line:] Implementing a Java Virtual Machine is an admittedly tricky business, but Apple has done pretty good on its first try with Mac OS Runtime for Java. MRJ won't win any contests for speed or comprehensive support of Java, but neither will it crash your machine every time you use it with your favorite browser.

After several wobbly beta releases, Apple recently introduced version 1.0 of Mac OS Runtime for Java (MRJ). While significantly more sound than its beta predecessors, MRJ still feels rough around the edges compared to the Java software included with or built into other popular Internet programs.

While the potential uses for MRJ are appealing -- consider the future bundling of Marimba's Castanet Tuner with MRJ (see Webintosh's First Looks page) -- my examination of MRJ focuses primarily on how it enhances the function and interactivity of the average Joe's (or Jane's) Web browsing experience.

Like most Apple products, MRJ installs in a snap, dropping Java class libraries within your System Folder; and the Apple Applet Runner program, along with Java applet examples, into its own folder. If OpenDoc is present, Applet Viewer Stationery (used for embedding Java applets within other Live Objects, such as Cyberdog documents) is also installed.

MRJ asks for a minimal configuration of System 7.5, 4-6 MB of hard disk space, and at least 8 MB of RAM. (The 68K version, currently in its fourth beta, lists the same requirements, and no less than a 68030 processor.) Since MRJ runs in system memory (as opposed to running within another application's memory partition), Apple strongly recommends having 16 MB of RAM to comfortably run MRJ and other Internet apps concurrently. My recommendation is that you have at least 32MB of RAM -- MRJ is a memory hog, and will bog down or refuse to load applets under even the lightest Java load, even in 16MB of RAM.

The beauty of MRJ is that it makes running Java applets and programs a transparent, built-in function of your Mac... just the way it should be. No longer are you restricted to running Java applets and programs within your favorite browser. As a stand-alone applet launcher on your hard drive, MRJ has the Java Virtual Machines (JVM) included with the leading browsers beat hands down in terms of speed and stability. The same cannot be said, however, for MRJ's online performance.

In my testing, MRJ simply couldn't run as vigorously as the JVM's included with Netscape Navigator (NN) and Microsoft Internet Explorer (MIE). MRJ is durable -- it crashed only twice in a week's use -- just not very potent. I tested several calculator, drawing, and game applets on the Web that seemed to work fine in NN and MIE, using each browser's respective JVM. However, when I accessed the same applets online in those browsers using MRJ, some inconsistencies cropped up with Apple's JVM. (Incorrectly drawn interfaces, tools or menus that functioned only partially or not at all, entire blanked-out sections of the applet, to name a few.) I'll admit, I've had more unexplained crashes and freezes with the two leading browsers' Java software than I care to recount, but those implementations seem more robust in performance and Java support (especially Netscape's) than MRJ does.

Lastly, MRJ is much slower in loading and running Java applets online than competing JVM's. There are rumblings from the mother ship that the next release of MRJ, version 1.5 due later this spring, will address the speed issue. The top priority in getting version 1.0 out the door was stability, and in that (as I've mentioned), I believe Apple's Java engineers have succeeded.

Is MRJ worth your time? If you're a casual Web surfer, who only occasionally brushes up against a Java-enabled Web page, you might do better sticking with the Java Virtual Machine that was installed with your Web browser. MRJ is exciting technology, and when Java applications (such as Corel's upcoming Office Suite for Java) are in widespread use, it will be indispensable. But like any software whose moniker is tagged with the digits '1.0', MRJ has a few kinks yet to work out.
